Remodel Reveal: An Accessible Master Bathroom

This remodel was fun because it was with a repeat client who we had remodeled their kitchen a few years prior. Our client approached us about redoing both their master and guest bathrooms because they were not equipped or designed for safety and accessibility for someone in a wheelchair. Aside from updating the aesthetics of both bathrooms, it was also important to update for accessibility as well.

Knowing that both bathrooms were not large enough to easily fit a wheelchair, the game plan was to remove everything existing in both rooms and start from scratch. We didn’t want to leave our clients without a working bathroom, so we did one room at a time.

We started with the master bathroom first, tearing out the vanity, lighting, tub/shower combo and flooring. We then installed concrete backer board in the shower area to prepare for Kohler Choreograph wall panels. Our client chose a style that resembled marble but at a fraction of the cost. One of these panels was a wide-locker wall panel for easy-to-reach storage.

An Onyx shower base with ramp was installed for wheelchair accessibility, along with a frameless bi-fold shower door and multiple grab bars.

Prior to laying the vinyl plank flooring, we installed a floating vanity. This was a great choice for our client, as there would be plenty of room a wheelchair to fit underneath. Our client chose a recycled glass countertop with blue accent pieces. In completing the vanity, a rectangle undermount sink and touchless faucet were put in place.

A wall mirror was hung above the vanity and extended across the entire wall from the entrance of the room all the way to the shower. We also hung an updated light fixture and an occupancy sensor light switch for recessed lighting.

In completing the bathroom remodel, polished nickel pulls were installed on the vanity cabinets. A frameless glass mirrored medicine cabinet was mounted to the wall and additional grab bars were hung throughout the room.
